The Miracle Metal
Stainless steel is an alloy of iron with a minimum of 10.5% Chromium. This Chromium produces a layer of oxide on the surface of the steel known as a ‘passive layer’ which prevents corrosion of the surface. The more chromium the more corrosion resistance. Stainless steel also contains Carbon, Silicon, Nickel, Nitrogen, Molybdenum and Manganese which may enhance formidability, pliability and resistance to corrosion.
The combination of unique properties in stainless steel allows it to behave differently than other metals.

One of the greatest aspects of stainless steel is that it is 100% recyclable and its impact on our environment is very small—even smaller as it is used and recycled over and over again. During this recycling, stainless steel maintains its quality and metallurgical properties. Some finishings on stainless steel like acids, render portions of the material non-recyclable.
But for the most part, stainless steel from automobiles, structures, and even the forks we use to eat with, are recycled to make the most beautiful and long-lasting products.

The durability and recyclability of stainless steel also reduces life-cycle costs of consumption, energy usage and time to mine other valuable resources. For every ton of recycled stainless steel, it saves 1 1/2 tons of iron ore, 1/2 a ton of coal, and 40 percent of the water normally used in the production process. By using ferrous scrap rather than virgin materials in the production of steel, CO2 emissions are reduced by 58 percent.
